 Euthanasia

For many of us the bond we have with our pets is a strong one, especially for those of us who have our pets as our primary companion. For us the human-animal bond is especially strong so the decision concerning euthanasia is especially difficult. This is a very personal decision but one that should not be made by the pet owner alone. Consult your veterinarian, your family and your friends; always keeping in mind the quality of life for your pet.

While your veterinarian can provide an objective assessment of your pets physical condition, as owners, you are the best judge of the quality of our pets daily life.

Is your pet happy to see you when you get home from work?

Is your pet mobile enough to climb the stairs or jump on the couch with you?

How is your pet eating?

There are many more questions to ask, but as our pets age, the changes are slow and gradual, which sometimes makes it difficult for us as owners to see this.

One objective approach (if that is possible) to assessing your pets quality of life is to pick five things your pet enjoys doing. These activities can be as simple as snuggling on the couch or going for a car ride or short play-time in the back yard. If you notice that your pet has lost interest in doing the things they love the most, then you know its quality of life is changing and you must make another critical decision. Are the bad days starting to outweigh the good days? If so then it is certainly possible that the time has come to consider euthanasia.

Once you have come to that conclusion, do not look at it with guilt but perhaps as the kindest thing you can do for your pet, the final act of love you can give your pet to remove the pain and suffering and send them to the Rainbow Bridge. Take time to say goodbye before you take your pet to the veterinarian. Go for a walk on the beach with your pet, feed them their favorite food and hug them all day long. Make the time quality time, before you send your pet to the Rainbow Bridge where we will all, someday, meet our pets again - forever. back to top

Something to Think About Once You Have Decided

Any why I've loved you all these years.

My partner till the end.

Please understand just what this gift

You're giving, meant to me,

It gives me back the strength Ive lost

And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,

For that is what friends do,

And know that what you do is right,

For I believe it too.

So one last time I breathe your scent,

And through your hand I feel,

The courage that's within you,

To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,

Dear friend and let me run,

Once more a strong and steady dog

My pain and struggle done.

And I dont despair my passing,

For I wont be far away,

Forever here within your heart,

And memory Ill stay.

Ill be there watching over you,

Your faithful friend,

And in your memories Ill run

A young dog once again.

 The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who are hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together back to top
